Richard Brookens After graduating from Berklee College of Music where he majored in composition and studied with Joe Viola, Richard went on to receive a National Endowment for the Arts grant to study Jazz Improvisation with Charles Banacos. He later began his studies on Bansuri and Tabla at the Ali Akbar College of Indian Music in San Rafael, California.

Richard is an arranger/composer and multi-instrumentalist performing on saxophones, flutes, clarinets as well as performing with Tabla drums (from India), Udu (Clay Pots), Native American Indian Flutes, and bamboo flutes from India (Bansuri) and China (Dizi).

He is currently performing concerts and in night clubs as the leader of The Richard Brookens Hard-Bop Jazz Quintet (Richard on Tenor Saxophone and flute, along with friends on Trumpet, Piano, Acoustic Bass and Drums), the Richard Brookens Saxophone Quartet performing Jazz, Classical and Ragtime pieces (Richard on Soprano, with Alto, Tenor and Baritone Saxes), and a World Fusion Duo (where he plays Soprano Sax, Bb Soprano Clarinet, Bass Clarinet, and Bamboo flutes) with Tabla Master Rajesh Bhandari.

While residing in South Florida since 1986 he has led many Jazz groups, most notably the Hollywood Jazz Quintet for 13 years, playing the Hollywood Jazz Festival, Sunfest and the Tampa Bay Jazz Fest along with numerous South Florida Jazz clubs.
